New York Trippin’

New York. Infamous, glorified, desired. The subject of movies, dreams, and music from Sinatra to Jay Z. Even the GLEE nationals competition is going to be held there. Need I say more? After spending just over a week in the Big Apple not too long ago, I am not the most qualified person to be writing a travel post. Well, it’s lucky then that I am not writing for Matador or Travel + Leisure. What I am doing here, is chasing Aphrodite, and there’s a lot of Aphrodite to be found in New York City, whether you’re there for a day, a month or a decade.

Some of the Aphrodite I chased when I was there

Shopping Aphrodite:

  • The Department Stores. The lot of them. Lord & Taylor, Saks 5th Avenue, Macy’s, Bendel’s, Bloomingdale’s and Bergdorf’s. I never met a department store there that I did not like. Especially when it sold me Miu Miu stilettos for 30% off full price, and especially when the gay Estee Lauder salesman told me to take an extra ‘free gift’ with my purchases, just because I was an Aussie getting his sales up.
  • Essie Nail Polish. Burt’s Bees. Clinique. ALL AT BARGAIN PRICES. Well, by Australian standards anyway. I didn’t bring enough back home and I’ve been regretting it every time I need new Burt’s Bees Shampoo or Clinique Moisturiser, or a particularly bright nail polish shade.
  • New York Look. Another iconic store. Where else would I have gotten my Carrie-esque blue silk pumps? I get complimented on them left, right and centre.
  • The Shopping Outlets in Jersey. Not technically New York, but definitely a place for all sorts of bargains. Big ones. Like $10 Levis jeans and Guess Jackets.
  • The Forever 21 store on Broadway. Monumentally huge.
  • The quirky little boutiques in the Village, the great outposts of big stores in SOHO. I’d definitely recommend the Bloomingdale’s in SOHO, it’s edited for the likes of us lady shoppers. [Read more...]
